Yoga: Community, Connection & Conscious Awareness

One of the key qualities of having a regular yoga practice is how it can become an anchor when our lives, environments, relationships, health and work continually changes. Our Yoga practice offers us a space of consistency, a place we can always return to as our worlds change and rebalance. There have been continual shifts in class numbers, class preferences and needs throughout the last six months or so, this is normal in any industry, but it’s been particularly prevalent in recent months. But there are several aspects that have remained consistent in all Living Your Yoga classes and they are:

COMMUNITY: whether online or in-person, the feedback that always remains is the brilliance of our community; the respect, the care and the joy of practising together. This last term has seen many students developing or achieving their first inversions, and these experiences all took place in the heart of a supportive group with class members helping one another - this not only helps the person working on the posture, but also helps the observer pinpoint areas that they may need to bring their attention to for themselves.

*On a side note from this, there’s often a lot of opinions on working on inversions, such as they are performative, dangerous, or pointless, or something you should only do in a school playground. In my experience, these opinions are nonsense. If practiced with careful guidance and support, if there are no contraindications that would make the posture unsuitable, and if the student understands that the effort is in the process of working towards the final posture and understanding it (rather than just getting there), then the benefits can be quite phenomenal.

CONNECTION: The connection between individuals in a yoga class is really special. Every week, a group of people enter the room, often not knowing each other out of the yoga class environment, and really unique relationships are formed. I wouldn’t describe them as friendships, but there’s a connection, a shared interest and the practice in the room together forms a shared experience. The connection I have with everyone is also totally unique. Again, it’s not a friendship, but there’s a connection, a deep trust and an investment of time and energy. With all of this I approach every class with a sense of reverence, and I do everything I can to ensure that everyone feels safe, respected and comfortable.

CONSCIOUS AWARENESS: The more we practice yoga, the more we are able to harness the technique of becoming more present, more conscious and more aware of our thoughts, words and actions. By simply practicing this on the mat, an awareness of where our body is in space (the practice of proprioception); the intimacy that develops with our breath as it moves through us with it’s shifts and nuances, depending on the movement of our bodies and our minds; the awareness of those around us in the room, feeling their presence, hearing their breath; we slowly become more sensitive to the space that we are in, to how we feel, and to observing our thought patterns. All of these elements occur in our yoga practice to some degree.

The community, connection and conscious awareness that is cultivated through commitment to our classes, exists uniquely due to the shared interest that everyone develops over time. People often transition from joining yoga purely for the physical benefits, they are always surprised by the mental benefits, and once they’ve developed a regular practice, they may experience a curiosity that goes way beyond their expectations.

COUNTDOWN TO TURKEY YOGA RETREAT

I’m so excited to be running this years Yoga Retreat in Dalyan, Turkey! I’ve started planning the practices and drawing up idea’s for those that are able to share what looks to be an absolutely beautiful retreat.

I’ll be guiding group led movement practices, breath work and yoga nidra’s, along with individualised therapeutic sequences to bring ease and comfort. The beauty of the retreat being spread over the week creates an opportunity for everyone to express their yoga needs and preferences

I’m excited to explore the unspoilt beach that we’ll be staying near to, visiting the turtles, mud baths and hot springs! Our yoga practices will take place in the mornings and the evenings, so there will be plenty of time for people to choose how they would like to spend their time.

A retreat is just that. A time to step out of your daily routine in order to rest, reflect and refresh.

I cannot wait.

There are still spaces available if you’d like to join me for a last minute booking. Discounted price on flyer for all LYY students.

SUMMER SERENITY: YOGA NIDRA & SOUND BATH EVENT

This year we have 2 Yoga Nidra & Sound Bath Events, one in June and one in December. The December event always sells out as it’s at the end of the year, everyone needs a break from the festivities and busy-ness, are tired or just need some space to recoil, draw inwards and reflect.

The June event is always an interesting one. I always book an event nearing the middle of the year (July 2nd is the approximate middle of the year this year) as it seems like the perfect time to check in, pause and slow down a little, savouring the Summer days as they often whizz by in a flash. We often lose track of time in the Summer - there’s so much more energy, daylight, events and goings-on in the outside world. This to me makes it all the more reason to stop and tune in, to ensure that you’re still navigating your personal needs, intentions and desires, reminding yourself of those intentions or dreams that you may have realised or defined at the endif the previous year or beginning of this one.

A combination of the Yoga Nidra with a Sound Bath is support a deepening of release and deep rest; to reflect and restore, readying for the second half of the year.

There are still spaces available for this event. All you need is a mat, a blanket, a pillow or two, and anything else for you to feel comfortable lying on the ground. I provide drinks and homemade treats following the practice.

No experience is required.

I hope you can join us.
