Here Comes The Sun

Despite the term flying by, it feels like ages ago since I’ve connected with you all via the written word. I hope that you’re all keeping well and finding your yoga practice a great anchor in your health and wellbeing: physically, energetically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually!

I listen to feedback from our community about your practice regularly. I like to know what’s working for you and also what isn’t. Both in our group classes and a 1:1 capacity, I am told about how your practice has helped to support recover from illness, help to manage grief, create support in stressful periods of life, or simply allow you some time to switch off from everything else and take the opportunity to listen yourselves and to what you are feeling. The practice to switch off from all of the ongoings and noise around us, often allows us to drop in to our deeper sense of self, our inner wisdom, and hear what we really need…and perhaps work out how to create a space to be able to respond to ourselves.

I write this as I’ve been going through a lot in my personal life. It’s been incredibly challenging for me over the last 18 months or so - and the situation’s just seem to continue to intensify. I’m incredibly fortunate to have loving & supportive family, friends and a yoga community that keeps me going. And of course my practice.

My practices have expanded and deepened since my last blog, so I thought I’d share a little more about how Yoga, and other forms of therapy, help us to navigate, support and become a great anchor in our lives when we’re being challenged, put under pressure and maybe feel somewhat caged in by life’s circumstances. I don’t usually write about myself in these blogs, but thought to share how much yogic practices can really help.

Read on to find out more about Yoga as a form of Therapy and Healing; Next Terms Schedule; Well-Woman Events & Retreats; Newson Health & Dr Louise Newson’s latest book in Paperback; Health & Wellbeing Column (new column); Recent Training “The Pelvis Is Everything”; And a book recommendation …

Yoga as a Form of Therapy

Ashtanga Yoga has always been the practice that I return to. I danced around Hatha Yoga and various forms of meditation from the age of 14/15, but when I experienced Ashtanga Yoga at the age of 22, I felt a real sense of coming home to myself. Despite exploring so many different movement practices, styles of yoga and enjoying a variety of creative movement structures and play over the past couple of decades, I have always returned to my Ashtanga Yoga practice.

I hope that the practices that I share provide you with a safe space to always return to, and experience the feeling of coming home to yourself too. I encourage all of my students that attend my classes to choose at least one practice to take home with them and practice each day: something that resonates and that they can explore in their own time on a deeper level to reconnect with themselves. This is a really great healing practice.

Physically, for me, Ashtanga Yoga helps me feel strong, energetically I feel uplifted and grounded, mentally I feel a greater sense of clarity, emotionally I feel release, and spiritually I feel more connected to myself and my intuition. For me, it is like a mirror that shows me where I am at. Most of the time I arrive on the mat feeling pulled in so many different directions of what I have to do each day, but as I start to move through my practice, I have more moments where I can just be present and feel.

I practice Ashtanga four to five times a week at the moment. I practice in-person with my long-term teacher James Critchlow once a week. (I originally began his classes in my early 20’s) More recently I began practicing with another teacher as well, to help me deepen, develop and support my home practice. I came across Ashtanga Yoga teacher Adam Keen on his podcast. The first interview I listened to was with Ellen Johannesen with whom I spent an amazing week learning from at Purple valley in Tenerife in 2022. I listened to this podcast loads of times as I love how Ellen teaches: her approach and her knowledge about Buddhism and Ashtanga Yoga is just immense. As the podcast rolled on to the next episode, and the next, I found Adam’s enquiries and interviews really inspiring and felt drawn to attending his online Mysore Classes. After the first week (which is at a very generous introductory price) I felt so connected to my practice: it felt refreshed and I felt re-inspired. Adam is an authentic, encouraging and incredibly knowledgable teacher. I used to practice in the afternoons, or late at night, but now I generally start my practice online with Adam around 7am (after my coffee!) for anything between 30 to 90 minutes. It really helps me start the day and better cope with the challenges that arise. My practice has evolved and my enquiry has deepened, so much so, that I’ll be furthering my practice with Adam’s Ashtanga Yoga Online Course later this year which I’m very excited about!

I really recommend Adam’s Keen On Yoga podcasts and classes. For more information, and loads of really interesting articles on all aspects of Yoga, check out his website here: keenonyoga.com

Paschimottasana/Seated Forward Bend

I bookend my day with an evening Meditation practice. I’ve been quietly integrating and studying a Foundations In Teaching Mindfulness Meditation Course which was created by the late Michael Stone. I’ve studied many types of Meditation Practices from varying courses, led by different teachers, learned techniques from books and personal practice, but I wanted to find something that had a specific framework to work within to help me as I move through this challenging time in my life to help me process, explore and listen. The course was originally something I wanted to do for myself, but I have shared the beginnings of the practice in some classes, and individually, and have had really beautiful feedback. Practicing Meditation in the evening works for me: it closes the day quietly and with reflection. For me, the practice has been a great anchor and balances out my morning energising practice.

Anyone can practice meditation. At any time. You can sit or lie down, you don’t have to sit with your legs crossed. There are so many books and online courses to dip into to start your practice, even a short 3 minute practice can be beneficial. Start slowly with a realistic aim. Be kind to yourself.

I plan to develop a short online mindfulness course later in the year - I’ll keep you posted.

The course I’m currently doing is available through yogacampus.com where you can find a multitude of brilliant online and in person courses with fabulous teachers. I recommend having a look at what they have to offer - you don’t have to be a yoga teacher to attend all of the courses either.

As a Yoga Therapist, I often recommend my clients to other therapists that specialise in acupuncture, massage, counselling, nutrition, life-coaching, cranio-sacral therapy, reflexology to name a few. We all resonate with different practices individually, and with different people. We have lots of therapists in our community and I’m meeting more all of the time. I’ll be introducing a new therapist/health & wellbeing business in each termly blog - you may find something and someone that aligns with your needs.

Health & Wellbeing Column

I’d like to introduce Gaya in this newsletter. I’ve known Gaya for nearly 9 years now and she is an incredible woman that I’m really very honoured to introduce you to. Please read on to find out what she is currently up to and how she may be able to support you.

Gaya Neault is a Mum of two living in Kenilworth. She is nearing completion of a Level 5 diploma to become a qualified health and wellbeing coach. From a young age, she had an interest in how the body works, leading her to study Medicinal Chemistry at university. Her career included working as a QA manager, ensuring product quality for Lloyds Pharmacy.

For the past 9 years, she has been on a learning journey exploring her Ayurvedic heritage, understanding the body's functioning, the importance of gut health, and how diet, digestion, movement, lifestyle, and finding joy impact long-term health. She is excited to qualify as a health coach to share her knowledge and help people take ownership of their health and well-being to live energetic and healthy lives.

If you are interested in being a case study working with Gaya for either 4 or 6 weeks, please contact Gaya on 07779334478 or drop her an email: gayaneault@icloud.com

WELL-WOMAN YOGA EVENTS

We have two Well-Woman Yoga Events left this year. These events are really special and are designed for women to spend the afternoon being guided with yogic practices to release tension, encourage ease of mobility, enhance self-awareness, and take time to relax and connect with others in the community. As well as catering being provided by the fabulous Cafe Desa of Leamington, I invite an independent business that’s connected to wellbeing to each event. Our March event hosted Charlie, creator of F|lux Activewear, to talk and sell some of her range. Our next event in June will host a short talk with Gaya Neault who is developing her work as a Health & Wellbeing Coach (see her introduction above).

Well-Woman Yoga practices include: Joint Release (Pawanmuktasana); Spinal Release; Static and Flowing Sequences (Asana); Pelvic Floor Awareness Practices; Meditation; Breath Work and Yoga Nidra.

There are only a handful of spaces for both June and November Well-Woman Events this year - they have been selling quicker than I expected!

If you’d like to book both, please contact me directly as you will receive a discount, else head to my website to book your space online. Head to Book Classes at www.livingyouryoga.co.uk

WELL-WOMAN YOGA RETREATS

This October’s Well-Woman Retreat sold out in less than 24 hours, so I have booked to run three in 2025. March’s retreat has started to sell, June’s is half full and I’ve been receiving enquiries regarding November’s retreat.

Each Well-Woman Retreat includes a three night stay in the beauteous Namaste Barn in South Devon with 3 daily Yoga Practices, including Yoga Nidra; Nourishing Meals, Snacks & Drinks are Ayurvedic inspired or Indonesian inspired; Guided Foraging is organised; Women’s Health Talks available; Ayurvedic & Holistic Treatments available; Fire Pit Ceremony; Time and Space for You.

These retreats are designed for women that need some time to rest, reflect and restore. We spend so much time working, looking after others, keeping up with all of our daily, weekly, monthly tasks that time can fly by and we are just exhausted and wondering why we are doing what we’re doing! These weekends are an opportunity to unwind and reflect so that you are able to tune in and listen to your own needs: everything is done for you. There is space for you to attend practices, rest, read, walk, meet, talk and laugh with the community, and maybe feel inspired by the health talks, the meals, the yoga and the company!

Do drop me a line for more information or to reserve a space at info@livingyouryoga.co.uk

YOGA & NEWSON HEALTH

As Newson Health’s Yoga Teacher & Yoga Therapist, I was fortunate to be asked to provide all of the staff with mini office yoga classes last month. I created a short sequence of practices for posture awareness and inviting ease into the spine and pelvis; releasing joint pain and tension in the neck, hands, wrists and shoulders; and also some balance and breath work to support focus and concentration. Mini practices like these, that can be practiced in an office environment can just be the perfect tonic to step back from becoming overwhelmed with a workload, release mental and physical tension and help stress levels become more manageable. The staff at Newson Health work really hard in supporting so many women, so it was a real honour to be able to give something to them.

I was due to begin a 6 week Yoga Therapy For Menopause Course at Newson Health Wellbeing Centre. This is on the back burner at the moment due to my current schedule, but it is still going to go ahead at some point. I had received quite a few enquiries about running it online too, so I’m going to work out how to navigate both in-person and online opportunities. Drop me a line if it’s something that you feel you could benefit from and I’ll get back to you when I have confirmed my arrangements.

Dr Louise Newson’s latest book is now available in paperback! I was honoured to be asked to write a chapter in this book on how Yoga can support the Menopause transition. I will be bringing signed copies of Louises’s books to Well-woman Classes & Events this year - let me know if you’d like me to save one for you.

The Pelvis Is Everything

Judith kindly wrote me a note as I forgot to take one of her books to sign ;)

Last weekend I attended a training with Judith Lasater at Yogacampus in London. The whole weekend was centred around the pelvis, exploring and experiencing how the movement and positioning of the pelvis, both is asana practice and in life generally, affects every position our body moves or rests in. Usually when we practice yoga asana, the practice focusses heavily on the spine, but interestingly, we can move the spine in different directions and it doesn’t always affect the pelvis, but if we move the pelvis, it always impacts the spine. So the weekend was spent working from this perspective which was really enlightening and once again, has opened my mind to a different way of practicing and looking at posture work.

Something that I love about teaching yoga is working individually with students to best support them in exploring how a posture feels works best for them. The beauty of understanding and delving a little deeper into understanding the anatomy of our bodies, helps us understand (and accept) that sometimes are bodies just aren’t going to ever sit in lotus pose, or maybe we’ll never rest our head on the ground in a wide leg forward fold, because some pelvis’s just naturally won’t allow us to due to the size, shape and structure of an individual’s pelvis. But what we can do in a yoga posture is modify, maybe using props, so that you can find a variation of the posture to experience its benefits, and explore, if that’s something that works for you!

I find that the more I learn about yoga, the less I know! It always keeps me hooked :)

Huge difference between female and male pelvis (imagine how different we all are individually?!)

Finally I thought to close this newsletter (which is now very long!) with a really good book recommendation. I often share Yung Pueblo’s poems at the end of my newsletters as I just find them so thought-provoking and beautiful. I was really excited to buy his latest book, which is also thought-provoking and beautiful! It’s about his personal healing journey and how his meditation practice helped transform his life. There’s lots of really inspiring messages in this book: it’s a great read for self-reflection too as he ends each section with questions for you to ponder on. It’s a really easy read too.

“your immediate reaction

does not tell you who you are

it is how you decide to respond after the reaction

that gives you real insight

into how much you have grown

your first reaction is your past

your intentional response is your present”

Lighter. Yung Pueblo.

Well, if you’ve read this far down, thank you! I hope that it has inspired you in some way :)

Do drop me a line with any feedback or if you have any yoga-related questions that I may be able to help you with.

Wishing you a fantastic half term and look forward to seeing you on the mat very soon.

Much Love,

Lucy x x

Taking a rest - see you next term :)

Hello Spring!

Well-Woman Event 16/3/24

Here we are again - another short and sweet term has flown by, and with it, it is bringing Spring. This Wednesday 20th March is the vernal equinox, otherwise known as the first day of Spring for us in the Northern Hemisphere. It’s also International Day of Happiness - a day that is to promote that humanity’s progress needs to include how to increase happiness & wellbeing.

Research suggests that there are 3 things that make people happy:

  1. Quality of relationships.

  2. Having a job/hobby that offers interesting challenges.

  3. Helping others through volunteer work or random acts of kindness.

I think there’s a lot more that we could add to this list :)

I know that I always feel happier after a yoga practice - and many of you tell me regularly how much better you feel after your class. When we feel better, we are better able to support others, tend to our work and to our relationships. Your Yoga practice always leaves the mat with you on so many levels!

We have one week left of this term, then we break up for two weeks for the Easter Holidays. Read on to check out Next Terms Schedule; Easter Yoga Challenge; Events in 2024; Retreats in 2025; Mandy’s Yoga Charity Fundraiser Results; Living Your Yoga Gift Bags and some sweet words to end.

Easter Yoga Challenge!

As our yoga community loves a little Summer Challenge, I thought to warm us up a little and introduce a challenge over the Easter break :) I thought we could re-open our WhatsApp group and practice 10 Sun Salutations a day for the two weeks that we are off. I’ll add a video the variation of Sun Salutations to choose from, as before, so that everybody will be able to get involved! They include Well-Woman Sun Salutation, Kneeling Salute, Hatha & Ashtanga Yoga Sequences, so that you can choose any, mix and match or work on the same practice every day! Drop me a WhatsApp if you’d like to be added to the group (please check if you’re already in the group).

Then we’ll rustle up a new daily challenge for the Summer :)

It’s Time

There comes a day, somewhere in the

middle of every woman’s life, when Mother

Nature herself stands behind us and wraps

her arms around our shoulders, whispering

“It’s time.”

“You have taken enough now. It’s time to

stop growing up, stop growing older and

start growing wiser – and wilder.

There are adventures still waiting on you

and this time, you will enjoy them with the

vision of wisdom and the companionship of

hindsight, and you will really let go.

It’s time to stop the madness of comparison

and the ridicule of schedule and conformity

and start experiencing the joys that a life,

free of containment and guilt, can bring.”

She will shake your shoulders gently and

remind you that you’ve done your bit.

You’ve given too much, cared too much,

you’ve suffered too much.

You’ve bought the book as it were and worn

the t-shirt.

Worse, you’ve worn the chains and carried

the weight of a burden far too heavy for

your shoulders.

“It’s time” she will say.

“Let it go, really let it go and feel the

freedom of the fresh, clean spaces within

you. Fill them with discovery, love and

laughter. Fill yourself so full you will no

longer fear what is ahead and instead you

will greet each day with the excitement of a

child.”

She will remind you that if you choose to

stop caring what other people think of you

and instead of caring what you think of you,

that you will experience a new era of your

life you never dreamed possible.

‘It’s time’ she will say…

“to write the ending, or new beginning, of

your own story.”

Tuesday Night Mixed Ability Yoga at The Parochial Hall & Online

Please sponsor Mandy’s February’s Daily Yoga Challenge  in aid of Cancer Research

Please read Mandy’s words below and click on the link to sponsor her!

“I have been doing yoga with Lucy in Kenilworth from the get-go – I am committed to the benefits practice brings me. I have been on both retreats and love the well woman events – the community inspires me, I even sign up for the summer challenges – but manage only half a dozen half-hearted sun salutations… but I have come to the firm realisation in my dotage that I work best in a group and left to my own devices I have no commitment or motivation to do anything on my own whatsoever – I am a groupie in the yoga space for sure!

Anyway, on a recent dark night I was lost in the tunnel of Facebook when an advert for the Cancer Research UK February Yoga Challenge popped up and in a moment of madness (much like the LYY summer challenge) I signed up!  This is a charity close to my heart – having lost both my parents within a month to cancer during the pandemic. So, I do want to make this work – but I think I need some help! Therefore I turn to you fellow yoga groupies – can you please sponsor me?

Here is the link to my Giving Page: https://fundraise.cancerresearchuk.org/page/amandas-giving-page-3409?fbclid=IwAR3u6lkLMUodGDOAEz9OR8YWoYnyAvNgZASPlIJLfhqFMpN-teL6HkKfbu0

I am also sharing the link via Facebook (of course)

When you donate to my page they can guess how many hours of yoga I will achieve in the comment box and I can reward whoever gets it closest to the mark – I am aiming for 20-30 mins a day outside of the 2 classes I do each week with Lucy.  There’s a bottle of fizzy alcohol on offer for whoever get closest to the mark!”  Mandy Brougham, Kenilworth

Well-Woman Yoga Events

Our March Well-Woman Event has already sold out and both June and November’s events are filling up too. Spaces at these events are limited. Yoga Nidra For Creativity

Keep your eyes peeled for my forthcoming Yoga Nidra practice for Creativity. I’ve written and recorded numerous Yoga Nidra’s for my Well-Woman Events, Retreats, my 1:1 Yoga Therapy Clients and for the Balance App. I thought it was about time I wrote another one to offer on my website for everyone who wants to explore using a Yoga Nidra practice to tune into their deeper creative selves, an opportunity to listen unconditionally and uncover something untapped and unique to you.

Yoga Nidra is a deeply healing practice and is known to help with sleep issues, prolonged stress and burn out, to support a deep relaxation practice and much more… The essence of the practice is to exist in the state between being awake and asleep: the body, mind and emotions are resting completely and peacefully as if sleeping deeply, but awareness is heightened: listening and observing.

“When you come to innocent, unconditional listening, your body goes spontaneously into deep peace” Jean Klein.

I’m looking to make Yoga Nidra For Creativity  available ahead of the Easter Break - I’ll keep you posted.

Rest.

Endings & Beginnings

Endings & Beginnings

Welcome to my final letter to you of 2023. I invite you to take a moment to sit down with me, grab yourself a cuppa and read upon a little reflection on the year we’ve had, and what we can look forward to in 2024 with Living Your Yoga.

Due to so many set-backs in 2023, I’m currently planning some fresh and inspiring events to look forward to in 2024, and even some hints at 2025.

Read on for your Weekly Class Schedule, 1:1 Yoga Therapy, Well-Woman Yoga Events, Retreats, Christmas Offers and more…

Reflections on 2023

Here we are already at the end of 2023. What a year it’s been. A real mixture of highs and lows, challenges and changes, conflict and the utmost desire and need for some peace and harmony, in what seemingly is a turbulent time in the world. It’s been a year of extremity for so many.

Working in our community, within 1:1 settings, group classes, retreats and online, there has been a real surge of immense change, loss, and learning to be with the unknown - in both of the positive and negative aspects of life.

Within yoga philosophy, we are taught a moral code called ‘Aparigraha’ which often translates as non-attachment. This guideline encourages us to  be present, without expectation or getting fixed on how things should be/are, working with accepting that everything is transient; not to be concerned with the outcome of a situation, but to focus on what we’re actually doing right now. This practice is helpful in times of change, when we feel like everything is out of our control - if we can let go of that control and be present in the moment, we can live more fully.

When we practice yoga on the mat, there is a certain comfort in knowing we can place our feet on the ground - feel the support of the earth beneath us; breath in and breath out the air around us; allow our gaze to rest softly to help draw our attention inward; listen to the sounds within ourselves, or maybe the breath of the person on the mat next to us in class. All of these experiences bring us into the present moment. Our practice on the mat can bring a sense of comfort and stability when we may feel that we don’t have that in our lives; and our classes create a sense of connection with others and our community - vital for our health and wellbeing.

Bring a friend! Next term, I’d like to offer all of you the opportunity to invite a friend to a class next term. This can be online or in-person, where there’s availability. All you have to do is ask your friend to message/email me the class they’d like to attend, who’s invited them, and I’ll let them know if there a space available for them. One friend per person.

Yoga Therapy 1:1

At the moment, my Yoga Therapy 1:1 calendar is fully booked. I also had to postpone my Yoga Therapy For Menopause Course due to the demand for 1:1 Yoga Therapy sessions.

These sessions can be in person or online; the first session is usually around 90 minutes, 60 minutes thereafter, and a personal home practice designed completely for your individual needs.

Yoga Therapy is a powerful form of therapy designed to help you support your own wellbeing: it is an empowering experience. Yoga Therapy may help you to understand underlying causes of suffering: mentally, physically, energetically and emotionally.

Practices are individually tailored in order to help deepen insight and self-awareness, supporting on-going health issues with greater ease. Yogic Frameworks and healthcare perspectives are used to help apply practical applications including: movement, breath work, meditation and relaxation techniques.

Well-Woman Yoga Retreat

This year Living Your Yoga ran two Well-Woman Yoga Retreats - definitely highlights of the year for LYY! The last retreat took place in November and was simply sublime. An amazing community of women, mouth-watering meals (thanks to Cynthia, Cafe Desa, Leamington), nourishing yoga practices (led by myself), an inspiring aromatherapy workshop (led by Aromatherapist Rebecca Tracey) all set in the luxurious Cotswold Park Barns, a beautiful venue completely immersed in nature. There was a lot of laughter, some tears, an abundance of food, deep sleeps, great conversation, birthday celebrations, hot tub giggles and mastering the art of lying down! Next October’s retreat in South Devon sold out in less than 24 hours before I was able to advertise. I may run another retreat earlier in the year if arrangements fall into place - let me know if you’d like to be added to my early bird list.

We’re hoping to return to the Cotswolds in 2025, along with another retreat in South Devon, and a little further afield in Kerala…watch this space ;)

Gorgeous Candles created by Rebecca Tracey

And there’s always your ‘Bring A Friend’ to class offer that could be a gift too! ;)

A Little Festive Tip

When there’s so much emotion and busy-ness around this time of year, it’s easy to get run down, overwhelmed and out of sorts. Other than the usual great tips which are to drink lots of water and get out into nature, I find a restorative posture with a breathing practice, meditation, nidra or a podcast really restful, restorative and rejuvenating. Grab your bolster, cushions or blankets to support you as you rest on your mat, or maybe rest your legs up the wall or a chair for a gentle inversion.

Friday Morning well-Woman Yoga

Well, I think that’s all for this year.

I wish you all a restful Christmas break and joyful New Year.

Looking forward to seeing you back on the mat in January 2024.

Much Love,

Lucy

For A New Beginning by John O’Donohue

In out-of-the-way places of the heart,
Where your thoughts never think to wander,
This beginning has been quietly forming,
Waiting until you were ready to emerge.

For a long time it has watched your desire,
Feeling the emptiness growing inside you,
Noticing how you willed yourself on,
Still unable to leave what you had outgrown.

It watched you play with the seduction of safety
And the gray promises that sameness whispered,
Heard the waves of turmoil rise and relent,
Wondered would you always live like this.

Then the delight, when your courage kindled,
And out you stepped onto new ground,
Your eyes young again with energy and dream,
A path of plenitude opening before you.

Though your destination is not yet clear
You can trust the promise of this opening;
Unfurl yourself into the grace of beginning
That is at one with your life's desire.

Awaken your spirit to adventure;
Hold nothing back, learn to find ease in risk;
Soon you will be home in a new rhythm,
For your soul senses the world that awaits you.

Autumn News (part 2)

Here’s a little follow-up note to your first Autumn News as promised. Although this letter has a focus on Yoga for Women, please do read on if you’re a man with any women in your life (partner/wife/mother/daughter/sister/friend…) as you may be able to pass this on to them :)

Well-Woman Event 4th November 2023

Well-Woman Yoga Afternoon Event

Firstly, I wanted to say a huge thank you to all of those that attended Saturday’s Well-Woman Yoga Afternoon Event at Leek Wootton Village Hall. I run these events three times a year at Leek Wootton and I really look forward to leading them: from the planning & preparation, through to inviting every woman into the hall, ensuring they have anything they need to be comfortable, sharing nurturing & explorative practices, both movement and stillness based… and every farewell is with a small gift, a huge hug and a feeling that everyone feels that little bit calmer, happier, relaxed and restored.

This morning I woke up to some lovely messages of feedback:

“What an absolutely amazing afternoon! Thank you so much. I went back to my sister-in-laws last night and we reflected how wonderful the time was. You are so gifted” Emma Ellis-Flint (Nutritionist/Balance App Expert)

“I have overnight reflected on what a therapeutic event it was for me and the timing was just perfect. I manage to truly relax and slept well last night. I have no idea how you keep coming up with new words and ideas” Sandra Swallow (a regular Well-Woman Client)

Cafe Desa are our caterer’s for all Well-Woman Yoga Events. We just love their delicious seasonal food and drinks - it really is a very special event.

She Let Go

She let go. Without a thought or a word, she let go.

She let go of fear. She let go of the judgments.

She let go of the confluence of opinions swarming

around her head.

She let go of the committee of indecision within her.

She let go of all the ‘right’ reasons. Wholly and

completely,

without hesitation or worry, she just let go.

She didn’t ask anyone for advice. She didn’t read a

book on how to let go… She didn’t search the

scriptures.

She just let go.

She let go of all of the memories that held her back.

She let go of all of the anxiety that kept her from

moving forward.

She let go of the planning and all of the calculations

about how to do it just right.

She didn’t promise to let go.

She didn’t journal about it.

She didn’t write the projected date in her day-timer.

She made no public announcement and put no ad in

the paper.

She didn’t check the weather report or read her daily

horoscope.

She just let go.

She didn’t analyse whether she should let go.

She didn’t call her friends to discuss the matter.

She didn’t do a five-step Spiritual Mind Treatment.

She didn’t call the prayer line.

She didn’t utter one word. She just let go.

No one was around when it happened.

There was no applause or congratulations.

No one thanked her or praised her.

No one noticed a thing.

Like a leaf falling from a tree, she just let go.

There was no effort. There was no struggle.

It wasn’t good and it wasn’t bad.

It was what it was, and it is just that.

In the space of letting go, she let it all be.

A small smile came over her face.

A light breeze blew through her.

And the sun and the moon shone forevermore.

Autumn News (part 1)

It’s amazing to recall that at the beginning of this term, our Friday morning Mixed Ability Class was still taking place outside! Now, eight weeks on, we’re moving into the depths of Autumn: misty mornings, cold and wet weather, the changing colours of our environment, naked trees, fiery sunsets and darker days… I’m always amazed at whatever is happening in the world, nature always continues to do it’s work.

Observing nature, being outside and soaking in the great outdoors through the senses can be one of the most healing experiences that we can do for ourselves… a sensory meditation can bring you completely into the present moment often helping to calm and soothe the nervous system. We’ll be working with sensory meditations a little more next term.

Brighton in October.

This is the first of two newsletters this Autumn. I’ll keep this one fairly brief  with an update on next terms schedule; introducing the latest range of Living Your Yoga Candles and their creator; a free online class to a friend offer; a proposal of a little Christmas get together…and to wish you all a happy half term break!

For those of you that book onto our Monday Evening Hatha Yoga Online Class, I’d like to offer you an “invite a friend to a class for free” treat any time this term. Just ask your friend to drop me a message, give me your name, and they can attend a Monday Evening Class free of charge - an uplifting gift to give to a friend on these dark days.

Living Your Yoga Candles

I’ve been so excited to share the launch of the Living Your Yoga Candle ‘Santosha’, created by amazing aromatherapist Rebecca Tracey.

Now available to buy in class and online.

The candle is 100% natural and made up of Black Pepper to help calm anxiety; Bergamot to help lift moods of depression; Patchouli to ground & soothe; Neroli to uplift.

I always light a scented candle for my home practice - it’s part of my daily ritual - and whenever I smell the scent of my candle when I’m not practicing, it evokes a sense of calm and happiness. This is what inspired a Living Your Yoga Candle.

If you’d like to purchase a candle, do drop me a message/email. If you’re not local and would like a candle posted to you, head to ‘Book Classes’ on my website, scroll to the bottom of the page and you can purchase your candle there. They come in full size and travel size.

I’m really fortunate to have Rebecca Tracey attend my November Well-Woman Yoga Retreat in the Cotswolds next month. She will be leading an afternoon workshop in creating personalised essential oils. We have a few more collaborations in the pipeline, but for now, I wanted to introduce you to her through a little interview below. Enjoy!

Very excited to collect my candles from the lovely Rebecca!

What drew you to aromatherapy?

WE WERE RESTAURANTEURS AND OUR ETHOS WAS FRESH, HEALTHY FOOD.  NOTHING FROZEN OR MICROWAVES.  OUR OLD FRIEND WAS BEGINNING HIS PERFUME JOURNEY IN FRANCE, AND OUR ETHOS WAS THE SAME JUST BETWEEN FRAGRANCE AND FOOD.  WE FELT IMMEDIATELY CONNECTED, AND WHEN WE SOLD OUR RESTAURANTS, WE BECAME PARTNERS IN A BUSINESS THAT WE BELIEVED IN

Who and what can benefit from aromatherapy?

EVERYONE!  THEY HAVE A TRUE LIFE FORCE THAT DOESN'T EXIST WITH MANUFACTURED SCENT.  HUMANS AND ANIMALS, SOMETIMES WITHOUT EVEN KNOWING RELAX, UPLIFT AND SIMPLY ENJOY MOMENTS OF CALM AND SERENITY DUE TO THIER PROPERTIES

What makes aromatherapy special?

THEY LIVE, EVOLVE AND CHANGE, JUST LIKE US.  NO TWO BATCHES OF ESSENTIAL OILS ARE EVER THE SAME, NOR ARE WE AS WE TRAVEL THROUGHOUT OUR DAYS, AND MOMENTS.

SCENT IS ALSO THE MOST WONDERFUL SENSE WE HAVE AS THE TRANSPORTATIVE POWER THEY CONTAIN ELICITS LONG FORGOTTEN MEMORIES MORE VIVIDLY THEN THE OTHERS.

What is your process in creating your products?

THIS VARIES DEPENDING ON THE INTENTION I HAVE FOR THE PRODUCT.  I MAY JUST WANT TO PLAY AND CREATE A NEW EXCITING FRAGRANCE, OR AS I'M WORKING ON A LOVELY NEW WELLBEING CAPSULE COLLECTION, EACH FRAGRANCE HAS A SPECIFIC PLACE AND EMOTION AND MOMENT THEY REPRESENT.

How long have you ran your business for?

I'VE BEEN A VERY SLOW BURN WITH THIS, AS I'VE BEEN MAKING FOR MANY YEARS, BUT IT WAS 6 YEARS AGO THAT I CREATED A VERY SPECIFIC BRAND AND REALLY BEGAN TO MOVE FORWARD WITH CREATING A FEASIBLE BUSINESS THAT I WAS HAPPY TO SHARE WITH EVERYONE.

What does your business do?

WE CREATE A HUGE RANGE OF NATURALLY BEAUTIFUL AROMATHERAPY PRODUCTS CREATED WITH 100% PURE INGREDIENTS, AND ALWAYS FRAGRANCED USING ONLY PURE ESSENTIAL OIL BLENDS THAT I CREATE.

Favourite aspect of your work?

I LOVE THE MAKING AND ALWAYS HAVE.  CREATING NEW PRODUCTS, BUT I ALSO LOVE SELLING AND MEETING NEW PEOPLE WHEN TALKING ABOUT THE BUSINESS, AS MY PASSION AND BELIEF IN WHAT I CREATE COMES THROUGH IN MY SHEER ENTHUSIASM WHEN DISCUSSING THEM ALL!

What does the future of your business look like? (Future events/products)

WE'VE GOT WONDERFUL PLANS TO KEEP EVOLVING AND BRINGING NEW PRODUCTS OUT, BUT THE MOST EXCITING VENTURE IS THE PLAN TO CREATE OUR REBECCA TRACEY WELLNESS CENTRE ABOVE OUR WORKSOP.  WE WANT TO BUILD A BEAUTIFUL INCLUSIVE HUB WITH LIKEMINDED PEOPLE,  PRACTITIONERS OF SO MANY GENRES, AND THEN RUN SOME WONDERFUL FULL DAY RETREATS WITHIN THE SPACE OFFERING CLIENTS A COMPLETELY IMMERSIVE DAY OF SELF CARE, EXPLORATION AND FUN!

Where are you based/opening times/how do we contact you?

MY WORKSHOP/BOUTIQUE IS LOCATED IN DODWELL TRADING ESTATE IN STRATFORD UPON AVON.  THERE ARE 2 FABULOUS ANTIQUES AND INTERIORS CENTRES THERE, A WONDERFUL CAFE, AND MY GORGEOUS STUDIO IS LOCATED DIRECTLY BEHIND. WE ARE ALWAYS THERE DURING THE WEEK, BUT WEEKENDS ARE QUITE BUSY WITH OUTDOOR EVENTS SO PLEASE DO GET IN TOUCH IF YOU'D LIKE TO HEAD OVER THEN AND WE'LL DO OUR BEST TO ACCOMMODATE YOU.

ALWAYS RING OR EMAIL; 07557 943882. OR rebecca@rebeccatracey.co.uk

YOU CAN ALWAYS SHOP ONLINE AT rebeccatracey.co.uk

What does Christmas look like for your business? Any new year plans?

CHRISTMAS IS A WONDERFULLY BUSY TIME.  I'M WORKING HARD TO RELEASE THE WELLNESS RANGE IN TIME, AND THEN BEGIN WORK ON THE STUDIO AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!

Thanks so much Rebecca :)

Christmas Get-Together

I thought it was about time that I organise a little Christmas get-together for those that are local/able to meet!

I’m going to pop a doodle-poll on our what’s app groups this week - let me know if you can make it and and preferences, then I’ll get something booked for us.

I think that’s all for now. Have a lovely half term and I look forward to seeing you back on the mat soon.

Much Love,

Lucy xx

Living Your Yoga Celebrates 5 Years in September!

Photo from 2018 when LYY first officially launched. Garudasana/Eagle Pose.

Time has flown by. I can’t believe that Living Your Yoga has actually been living and growing for 5 years already. The little seed of this business, without a shadow of a doubt, has grown into something wonderful with the support of loved ones and an amazing community. Living Your Yoga has blossomed thanks to it’s commitment to and belief in: supporting a community’s health and well-being, continually making new friends and working relationships, bringing people together harmoniously, and recognising the power of a yoga practice and it’s many levels.

In these five years, in order to keep this little business up to date and encourage growth, I’ve trained in numerous courses & workshops to deepen my knowledge and understanding of how yoga can help so many people: Well-Woman Yoga Therapy; Yoga Nidra Teacher Training; Adore Your Pelvic Floor; Yin Yoga with Sarah Powers; Ashtanga Yoga with David Swenson and Ellen Johannesen; and a huge qualification in training to become a Yoga Therapist with Yogacampus which I graduated from this year!

Elsewhere, I’ve written articles for Om Yoga and Midwifery Matters; contributed to Dr Louise Newson’s latest book “The Definitive Guide to the Perimenopause & Menopause”; created and filmed material for Dr Louise Newson’s Balance+ App; won and been nominated for the Muddy Stilettos Award several times; interviewed on podcasts, including Dr Louise Newson’s and Messy Luminous Being; presented live’s on Balance+; organising & running Yoga Retreats and Mini-Day Retreats; adapted to the online world of Yoga Classes since covid…and there’s more new and exciting things to come.

I think it’s really important to pause here and say a huge thank you to all of you that continue to commit to your yoga practice and attend classes, events and retreats with Living Your Yoga. It grows and blossoms because of your dedication. I always work on providing the best for our yoga community in order for you to get what you need and want from your yoga practice. As you all know, yoga grows with you - it’s a life practice - an anchor that hopefully carries you through the highs and lows and the in-betweens that life brings.

To celebrate Living your Yoga’s 5th Birthday, if you bring a friend to class in September, it will only cost them £5! What a treat! ;)

Please drop me a message in advance to ensure that there is space in the chosen class.

Summer 2023

August Yoga Challenge!

This Summer saw the return of the August Yoga Challenge. Loads of you participated in this little community challenge. This year I filmed 3 different styles of surya namaskar for everyone to choose from. I loved that many of you mixed up the sequences to create you own creative flow. It’s been wonderful to see your photographs of where you practiced in the world and who with! Thank you for sharing and joining in! I hope it helped maintain your connection to your practice throughout the Summer break.

Balance App

It was wonderful to share the news this Summer that Dr Louise Newson’s Balance App has reached over 1,000,000 downloads, supporting & helping over 1,000,000 women as they transition through the menopause. The app was designed to create a supportive community and provide up to date information about all elements involved in helping women, feel equipped with  menopausal knowledge, support and advice, free of charge.

For more information, live chats and video’s, Balance+ is available to download free for the first 7 days. I have been filming yoga practices, including movement, meditation, breath work and yoga nidra’s, that I’ve created for women, since the balance+ was launched 2 years ago.

The Shirodhara Experience

This Summer I met with my gorgeous long-term friend and Ayurvedic genius Virginia Compton. She introduce me to a treatment called Shirodhara (oil pouring on forehead) and I can honestly say, I literally relaxed so much I couldn’t move after the treatment! Virginia writes that “it’s one of the most powerful Ayurvedic treatments where a continual stream of warm oil is poured over the forehead to indue a deep feeling of calm. This blissful therapy quietens the mind, alleviates anxiety and heightens awareness, and is particularly effective for insomnia, headaches and stress.”

Virgina has also written a beautiful wellness book called Sattvic Soul. It’s full of rituals and recipes for finding balance and optimum health in everyday life. A really accessible read for everyone. I will bring copies of this book to our Well-Woman Retreat days and Weekend to sell at a reduced price. Do contact me if you’d like to reserve a copy. The Soul of Yoga

What is the soul of yoga?

Follow your heart into the

centre of the pose and find

in the midst of detail and

precision, in breath, alignment,

balance, bliss, fear and sadness -

at the very core of all of this

is love. Touch upon your

truest nature even once and

the experience of what you

really are sears the psyche

like the surface of the sun.

The soul of yoga, the gift

within the pose is the

moment of communion,

resting in pure essence,

the awakening as if from

sleep to the face of

unmistakable divinity;

the ineffable wonder and

living reality of spirit - oh,

yes - the soul of yoga is love.
